St Antony's

Catholic Primary School

God is at the heart of our school

Year 3

WELCOME TO YEAR 3

Miss Green/ Mrs Shanks 3GS    Mr Blooman 3B

Mrs Brooks Mrs Bramley

To all year 3 pupils and parents,

Miss Pampellone has noticed some children not wearing the school uniform including the PE kit. The PE kit is as follows:

  • T shirt in the colour of their team
  • School shorts (Navy blue).
  • Tracksuit trousers (Navy blue)
  • Sweat top (Navy Blue with school badge)
  • Plimsolls or trainers

We have seen a number of pupils, particularly girls wearing leggings, tights with their shorts, and cycling shorts. This is incorrect uniform and needs to be rectified ASAP.

Earrings needs to be removed before school. If a child has had a piercing within the last 6 weeks, tape should be applied to cover the earrings and they will not be permitted to do PE for that period.

Friday 26th January

Only a month ago, we were celebrating Christmas. The month has raced by and both year 3 classes are racing along as well!

This week 3GS made some wonderful pizzas which 3B will try to match next week (see sticker in diary). We've also seen a big increase in the number of year 3's wanting to join Chess Club on a Monday (special thanks to those who donated sets), which has meant a full class! The same can also be said for those wanting to play Sumdog on Wednesday lunch times - this is full too now! We are lucky to have such enthusiastic children who thrive on a challenge.

Homework this week: English comprehension, MyMaths, and spellings (apologies from Mr Blooman who made a mistake with the spellings for 3B, this will be rectified on Monday).

Next week the independence challenge homework will return, which will involve this week's Maths topic... Money!

A reminder to please check online for the latest parent evening day and times as I'm sure time slots will be booked up quickly.

A big thank you from Mr Blooman, Miss Green and Mrs Shanks to all the children and parents from year 3.

Friday 12th January

The new year has begun fast and frantic, and year 3 have coped brilliantly. Changing topics and themes have been the name of the game, especially now all distractions are out of the way (Class collective worship, Treasure Island production, Christmas, New Year to name but a few!).

The hard work towards Easter begins, and as always we intend to push our pupils to achieve the most they are able to. With that in mind, MyMaths and Comprehension work have been given out. We would also like to promote the use of SumDog which all children received log ins for. Mr Blooman is now running a SumDog club on Wednesday Lunch times to keep the competition going. Congratulations to both Monty and Charlotte for answering over 4000 questions this week! If any pupil requires a log in, please come to the ICT on Wednesday.

Chess club is also running every Monday and it's heartening to know there were 24 children from year 3 showing their enthusiasm.

Please ensure children are at school on time. We would like to see our children for prayers at 8:45 and not later.

Thanks from Mr Blooman, Mrs Shanks and the returning Miss Green.

Wednesday 20th Dec 2017

So the first term comes to an end... and it's been a hectic one! The year 3 production was an outstanding one, a big thank you to all the parents who came! The children were all amazing, looking resplendent in their costumes.

It's been a wonderful 3 months, and from all the staff at St Antony's we'd like thank all the parents for the presents for Christmas to the staff.

As a present from us to our pupils; Homework!

MyMaths, Spellings and comprehension work are all due in for Friday 5th January 2018. Please ensure all are completed.

Friday 24th November

What a week! Big congratulations to 3B for a wonderful performance in their class collective worship. A lovely theme of Baptism was well shared with the school and family.

Lots of information to take in, so deep breath!

  • The year 3 trip to the synagogue is taking place Friday 1st December. This will be morning only so will be having lunch as normal in school. Reply slips must be in by Tuesday.

  • We have sent out letters to parents regarding the production which is fast approaching! Please try and create an outfit along those lines.

  • Homework this week is only 2 fold – Spellings and MyMaths.

Thank you all parents as the classes this year and proving to be a joy to teach.

Mr Blooman, Mrs Shanks and Miss Green.

Friday 17th November

Hard to believe we’re halfway through November rolling on through this term. This week has seen lots more work and a complete run through of the year 3 production. Children have been given scripts and lines are starting to be learnt.

3B have also been practicing their class collective worship for next Friday. A reminder that some children have outfits to bring in for that day… complicated by the fact its dress down day next Friday!

Homework as per usual is MyMaths, along with a special anti-bullying comprehension piece. Spellings have been given out as well and it’s nice to see pupils really improving and working hard on their spellings.

Friday 10th November

Wow what a week! So much happened its hard to know where to begin. However we will start with prayers and thoughts for Miss Green who suffered a serious injury last weekend. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope to show her when she returns how well 3GS has coped. Well done to 3GS for adapting to difficult circumstances, and a big thanks to Mrs Shanks for stepping in.

A very enjoyable week was finished off (in slightly messy circumstance for some) with the creation of beaker pots using clay. They will be sent off to Trinity school next week to be fired and should look fantastic once decorated.

Well done to everyone in year 3 for getting their MyMaths completed. There is now no outstanding work so lets hope this continues! The comprehension work is slightly different as it is a competition to have a story published! Good luck with those who enter. Spellings continue to roll on so keep on practising.

Both year 3 classes have also seen a much improved PE kit display so thank you to the parents who have obliged. An update regarding footwear – trainers are allowed as long as they are a majority black.

A personal congratulations to class 3B. We had the highest attendance in the entire school for the first half term at a whopping 99.3%!!! Fantastic! It really shows how much you all enjoy coming to school and I’m glad to almost always have a full class. 3GS will hopefully challenge 3B much more for this half term.

The parts for the production have been given out. Don’t worry if you haven’t been given a named role, there are still lines to iron out with solo’s and extra lines to add in so work on the songs we’ve sent home so that by December you can sing you hearts out!

Friday 3rd November

Welcome back to school after a lovely break at half term. A slightly sluggish start for some pupils but towards the end of the week everyone is back in the swing of school!

Firstly a big congratulations to 3GS on their Class Collective Worship this Friday morning which has given 3B a tough act to follow! Reminder for those in 3B the CCW will take place Friday 24th November.

The parts for the Year 3 production have been given out and so lines will be sent home soon to practice. Further information regarding costumes and times of the performance will be given shortly. The date for parents to see the production will be Tuesday 12th December.

Copies of the songs for the children to learn will also be attached below shortly.

Again a reminder to all parents regarding homework which is set on a Friday: MyMaths (weekly) due in the following TUESDAY, English Comprehension (weekly) due in the following Thursday, Spellings (weekly) tested the following Friday.

Big write homework is set from Monday every 2 weeks with children expected to plan at home. There will be no more planning in class that was done on Thursdays.

One point to address to parents. Many children have NOT come into school with the correct PE kit. Please see attached the school uniform policy for PE which must be adhered to. Some PE kit that has been brought in, is inappropriate for school.

  • Black plimsolls or black trainers
  • T-shirt for P.E. in house colour
  • Shorts for P.E. same colour as the T-shirt or navy
  • Navy school tracksuit

Shorts must be standard shorts and not cycling shorts or leggings. Please note that children on a Wednesday will be outside and so are likely to get cold and will need a jumper.

Friday 20th October

Yes the date is correct, we've reached half term! That means don't come to school next week! (Unless you are part of the Premier Sports clubs taking place).

Well done to all of year 3 for their hard work so far since September and already there's been remarkable progress in both classes, so good job!

3GS have been practising their Class Collective Worship and now just need to practise and learn their lines over the break. For both classes, the singing in preparation for the production in December has been moving swiftly and we should be allocating roles after half term.

Now for the important part! Homework! As usual, the homework due in the week after half term will be:

  • Spellings (now given out every Friday and tested the following Friday)
  • MyMaths - given out EVERY Friday and due in by Wednesday morning (any pupil failing to complete this will stay in Wednesday lunchtime)
  • Comprehension - given out on Friday and due in the following Thursday.

This homework will need to be completed over the week off.

Finally a big thank you to the parents who came to discuss their child at Parents Evening, which hopefully gave everyone a clear insight into targets for the upcoming months.

Mr Blooman, Mrs Shanks, and Miss Green

Friday 13th October

We're getting close to the first half term of the school year. A busy week for both year 3 classes with 3GS starting to practice for their class collective on Friday 3rd November. The children have been given their lines which should be learnt by Thursday 16th October. Please could you also give your child a photograph of your family so that we can put together a collage of all the 3GS families.

All year 3 will now receive a reading comprehension task each week on a Friday to be brought back to school for the following Thursday. This may also be a grammar activity or task related to our topic. Children should write on the sheets provided and a homework folder will be collated at school.

Reminder that MyMaths homework is WEEKLY and must be completed by TUESDAY evening. It is set on a Friday each week. Any pupil failing to complete their homework will then have to complete it during their lunchtime.

The SumDog maths that we gave out last week has also proved to be extremely popular with those progressing given certificates in assembly.

A big thank you to the children in year 3 for having very good attendance in particular to 3B for having 99.3% attendance this week, which is almost as good as the 100% attendance we had 2 weeks ago! Keep it up!

Friday 6th October

We move into October this week and both the year 3 classes have been working hard. The Big Write this week was something that the children thoroughly enjoyed and we saw some very creative pieces of writing!

We've also seen some very impressive attendance figures in year 3, with hardly anyone missing a day of school. The previous week saw 3B have 100% attendance! More impressive considering the coughs and sniffles that seem to be prevalent at this time of year (even the Prime Minister failed to escape!).

Reminder again regarding MyMaths homework. This should be completed by Tuesday at the latest. It is available from the Friday. To log in for our school, go to the website and log in with the username starcp and enter the password stantony. Every child has a unique 3 digit username followed with a 3 letter password.

This programme uses Flash which means some browsers such as Chrome tend not to be able to run it. Internet explorer and Firefox both work well, and there is the option to use an add-on for chrome to enable access.

Those using Apple devices can download an app to enable use.

Any further problems please leave a note in your child's diary so that we can rectify and issues.

Mr Blooman, Miss Green and Mrs Shanks

The weeks keep rolling on and another enjoyable week for year 3.

Starting with the Rock day with a brilliant visit into the school. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day, and took a lot from it.

A big thank you once again to the parent helpers who really do make a huge difference.

Photos of the visit are below.

Reminder that this week's MyMaths is online. There are several children yet to complete their homework for the past 2 weeks. This homework must be completed by Tuesday.

For 3B, I've also included the Fab50 book list as well as the template for book reviews for parents wishing to print off copies for their children.

Another good week for the children in year 3 where this week we had our first Big Write!

The children seemed to enjoy writing about their lives compared to those who lived in the stone age. Without football, I'm not sure what a lot of the boys would have written about!

3GS also took advantage of the warm weather (yes there was about an hour of it!) to go outside and enjoy some Maths - the evidence is below!

Homework this weekend as usual is the MyMaths. All children should have access to the website as I gave every child who hadn't completed last weeks homework their log in.

Monday we're looking forward to more work on rocks and fossils with a special day dedicated to it. The whole of year 3 will be enjoying this for the entire day in the hall.

Welcome back to everyone and welcome into Year 3!

The first week back has been an exciting one, with a school trip, exciting writing, and brilliant clay fossil making.

A big thank you to the parent helpers who came on the trip to the Redbridge Museum. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that both adults and children appreciated. Pictures of the trip are below!

Reminder to parents that MyMaths homework is to be set every Friday, due in by Tuesday at the latest. If any log in issues arise, please send in a note with your child and we'll look at ways to resolve access. Spelling homework is stuck into journals every Monday.

We look forward to the year ahead for 2017/2018!

Mrs Shanks, Mr Blooman, Miss Green

Just a little reminder to make sure your child has sun cream applied before they come to school and that they wear a sun cap and bring water to drink throughout the day.  Thanks.

Week beginning 19th June

Well done Year 3 on leading a beautiful Mass on Monday.  It really was a special occasion.

Arrangements for Monday 19th June – First Holy Communion Mass

Children need to come to school at the usual time, in uniform, with their Communion outfit in a named bag. No hair gel is allowed.

Mass starts at 10.30.

If you wish to help your child get ready please come to the classroom at 10.00. At 10.15 parents will be asked to leave the classroom.

After Mass please let the children leave first. We will then all have lunch in the Becket Centre. Please note that parents will be seated separately from the children and children will be asked to stay in their designated seats.

There will be photo opportunities after lunch has finished in the Rose Garden (weather permitting).

Children will then be expected to go back to school for the rest of the afternoon and be collected at the usual time of 3.15.

Many thanks

Miss Green and Mrs Johnson

Week beginning 5th June

This week we will be beginning our Journey In Love programme and continuing with it next week.  We will be discussing how we are all unique, how we look after ourselves and how others look after us.  We will think about the importance of friendship and the difference between being alone and being lonely.

This year we will always be following guidance and using materials from the NSPCC in their PANTS (preventing abuse) campaign.  Please follow this link for the NSPCC's Underwear Rule Guide for Parents.

https://www.nspcc.org.uk/globalassets/documents/advice-and-info/underwear-rule-parents-guide-children-autism.pdf

We would like to wish all the children the very best as they receive Communion for the first time.  May God bless you and your families at this very special time in your spiritual journey.

It would be great if you would let us have a photo of your child on their special day so that we can collect them and place them around our class altars.

Week beginning 15th May

This week we are researching different information about Australia for our Big Write on Friday.  In maths we have been interpreting data from tables, bar charts and pictograms.

Next Tuesday Year 4 will lead our May Procession in the afternoon.  Year 3 will placing flowers on the altar and it would be lovely if children could bring in some flowers that morning for this.  Thank you.

Week beginning 8th May

We have continued with our English topic on traditional tales this week with the Hindu story of Rama and Sita which we will link with our next topic which is non-fiction reports about countries and we will begin with India.

In maths we are doing lots of money problems and telling the time.  Why not encourage your child to help you pay next time you visit the local shop?  Also encourage your child to tell you the time in both analogue and digital times.  Can they tell you how long it has taken them to do something?  Why not time the different things you do during the day?

Week beginning 1st May This week we are measuring in maths.   Why not ask the children to measure out the ingredients you need in cooking or baking this week?  We are continuing with traditional tales and are reading Orpheus in the Underworld this week.

Please see below the Big Write for Friday.

Week beginning 24th April

The children have made a great start to the new term.  They are really enjoying reading and listening to different traditional tales.  Why not ask your child to tell you one of them. In maths we are looking at the properties of shapes and drawing some 2D shapes.

As always, please make sure that your child completes their online mymaths homework which is set every Friday for the following Friday as well as recording what they have read every day in their diaries.  The Big Write task is set every fortnight.  The next Big Write will be on 5th May and as it is a bank holiday on Monday 1st we will be sending out the Big Write task and the spelling homework on Friday 28th April.

As the weather is hopefully going to become warmer and warmer, we would like all children to bring in a water bottle every day.

Welcome Back!

Please see our summer newsletter below for an overview of what we will be doing in Year 3 this term.

Week beginning 27th February

This week the children have been fascinated by the events which took place in Pompeii nearly two thousand years when Mount Vesuvius erupted.  Year 3 have been collecting their own data and presenting it in tallies, bar charts and pictographs.

Week beginning 20th February

Welcome back after half term!  Thank you for taking the time to meet with us on Monday. We both found the meetings very constructive.

This week in Maths we have been measuring mass and capacity, focussing on reading the callibrations very carefully.

In English and Topic we have been finding out all about different volcanoes and how they are formed.

Please note that mymaths is set every Friday to be completed by the following Friday. Thank you.

Wishing you all a healthy and restful half term break.  We are looking forward to meeting with you on Monday 20th February to discuss your child's progress.  Please see below the learning objectives for Year 3 children which we will be discussing at the meeting.

Week beginning 25th January 2017

The children have made a great start this term and are working hard.  In Maths we have been learning about fractions and this week children are telling the time on an analogue clock.

This half term we are reading the Firework-Maker's Daughter, a story by Philip Pullman set in Indonesia.  It is wonderful to see the excitement on the children's faces as we read the story to them.  This week they have imagining what Razvani, the fire-fiend who lives in Mount Merapi, is like.

We have now begun our new topic, Active Planet, where we will be studying volcanoes and natural disasters.  The children are already very animated and eager to learn more about these.

Please can we remind you that children should be reading for 10-15 minutes every evening and recording it in their journal.  Also mymaths is set online every Friday and should be completed for the following Friday.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Please see below the Spring Curriculum Newsletter, which sets out what we will be covering in Year 3 this term.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well done Year 3! You were all stars in our performance of "Babushka"!

Week beginning 28th November 2016

Life is very busy in Year 3 at the moment.  We have been working hard on multiplication in Maths and non-fiction reports in English.  In the afternoons we are very busy preparing for our Year 3 Show on the 13th December.  We will be performing to the school in the afternoon and to parents in the evening.  The performance to parents will begin at 7pm but children need to arrive at school by 6.30 at the very latest.  Children can start arriving from 6.15.

Please note that children must bring their costumes into school on Monday 5 December.  Thank you for your help!

Big Write for Friday 18th November

Week beginning 7th November

Well done to 3G for their Class Collective Worship.  You all knew what to do and performed beautifully.

There are still a couple of children who have not brought back their PE kits after half term.  Please make sure your child has their full PE kit in school with jogging bottoms, a sweatshirt and suitable footwear to wear during outdoor PE in the winter.

Please see attached again the powerpoint from the Parents' Information Meeting at the beginning of term - please refer to it for information about Year 3.

A little reminder that children are set a task on mymaths every Friday to be completed for the following Friday.  If you have any IT difficulties regarding this please let us know.

Well done to all those children who are reading for at least 10-15 minutes each evening and recording this in their diary.  It is really important that children get into the good habit of reading every day and recording this so that we see what each of the children is reading.

We hope that you enjoyed the apple pies last week,

made with apples scavenged from the friary!

You should all have received a Home-School Agreement in your child's bag as well as a permission tick list by email.  Thank you to those of you who have returned these.  Please can anyone who hasn't returned them, return them to their class teacher as soon as possible.

We are now getting ready for our First Holy Communion celebratory mass and thinking about the importance of us receiving the Eucharist in our lives.

Big Write Homework 10th June 2016

Big Write Homework 10th June 2016 1

Week Beginning 16th May

As the weather is so changeable at the moment, please will you check the weather forecast each day and ensure that your child comes to school ready for the weather that day, be it sun cream and sunhat or winter coat (!), as we like to go outside whenever possible.

Mymaths homework is set every Friday to be completed for the following Friday.  Its purpose is either to re-enforce what was taught the week before or to recap on a topic that will be revisited and developed further the following week.  It is NOT optional and is an important part of our curriculum provision.  Please ensure that your child does their Mymaths homework each week.

If you have any queries on how to access Mymaths.co.uk please ask your class teacher.

Big Write Homework Due Friday 20th May 2016

Week beginning 9th May

This week the children have made great progress tackling money word problems using different operations.

In English we have begun reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes (not the Marvel one!).

Please see the note above about the First Communion Mass we will be celebrating here at school on 20th June.

We advise that children bring in a bottle of water on hot days and keep it in the designated place in their classroom.

Week beginning 2nd May 2016

Hope you enjoyed the lovely Bank Holiday weekend!

Thank you for all the cards (and pressies) for Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday!

It is great that the weather is getting sunnier and summer is coming.  Please can you ensure that your child has a school sun cap in school every day and that they have had suncream applied before coming to school on hot days.  They should also have the correct PE kit (school top and shorts) in school.  It is also advisable that children have a good pair of trainers in school for outdoor PE on Wednesdays.

Big Write Homework - Due 6th April 2016

Big Write Homework - Due 6th April 2016 1

Week beginning 25th April

The children have had a lot of fun in maths this week, planning their own First Communion parties.  Perhaps they could help you with some of the arrangements for the real ones!  In English we are writing play scripts of the Fairy Tales we have been reading.

Please can we remind parents of the following:

Homework is set on mymaths.co.uk each Friday and should be completed by the following Friday.  If your child is unable to do their mymaths homework please write a note for us their school diary.

Children are expected to read for 10-15 mins each evening at home.  The book and the pages they read should be recorded in the school diary each evening under the space for that particular day.

It is a short week next week.  Monday is a bank holiday and Thursday is polling day so there is no school on those days.  However, we do expect mymaths, spelling and Big Write homework to be completed for Friday.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday Monday! (Fingers crossed for a warm, sunny one!)

We have been buying our party food for our First Holy Communion Party, making sure we stick to a £50 budget.

Week beginning 20th April

This week the children have been enjoying reading and retelling orally lots of different traditional fairy stories.  Why not ask them which one they read today?  Our focus in maths is division.  It is really important that the children continue to practise times tables regularly at home as well as in school.  In science, we are looking at light and shadow and the children conducted an experiment to find out what happens to a shadow when the object moves further from the light source.

Please note that we will be having our own special First Communion Mass on 20th June in the school hall followed by a celebration lunch at the Beckett Centre.  Parents are invited to attend both (please see last week's whole school newsletter).

Big Write Homework due 22nd April

Big Write Homework due 22nd April 1

Week beginning 11th April

Welcome back!  We hope you all had a great Easter.

We have been really impressed with the projects which the children have done over the holidays.  Thank you, parents, for all your support with these.  The children are thoroughly enjoying presenting them and listening to each other's.

This week our English is focused around the poem The Alligator by Grace Nicholls and the children have been writing their own dramatic poems in the same style.

In maths we have been thinking about measuring accurately.  Why not bake a cake this weekend and ask your child to measure out the ingredients for you!!

We have begun a new science topic, Light and Shadow and so, next week, please can the children bring in a torch for our experiment.  Thank you.

Week beginning 21st March

Over the Easter holidays we want you to complete a project.  The project can be on any aspect of the areas we have covered in Topic, ie, Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Pompeii or volcanoes.  Please choose a topic related to one of these which particularly interests you.  You can present the project in a format of your liking eg powerpoint, making an artefact, a scrap book, a poster etc.  Any powerpoints should be emailed to the school for the attention of your class teacher.  We cannot use USB sticks.

The projects must be brought into school on Tuesday 12th April.

Have a great holiday!

Week beginning 14th March

This week we are all really enjoying reciting the Roald Dahl poem, The Pig.  Please note that when preparing for the Big Write we do not expect it to be written out in full.  Children should be simply making a note of some ideas and a few WOW words they would like to use.

In maths we have been telling the time on analogue and digital clocks as well as 12 and 24 hour clocks.  Please continue to practise this with your children.

Year 3 have had a fantastic week this week with book week.

We combined our English with our Maths to find 3D shapes in Pompeii, direct people away from the exploding Mount Vesuvius using Right angles. We identified angles in mosaics before creating our own mosaics using shapes with Parallel and Perpendicular lines.

We have been researching and creating fact sheets all about what happened on that fateful day in 79AD as well as creating comics to retell the story.

The week ended with a fantastic dress up day where we had soldiers, emperors, citizens of Rome, an archaeologist as well as some volcanoes!

World Book Day - Romans, Volcanoes and Pompeii

BIG WRITE HOMEWORK due the 3rd March

Book Week will be the week beginning 7th March.

Our theme is non-fiction – the Romans, Pompeii and volcanoes.

On Thursday 11th please dress up in the above theme.

Year 3 have had a great first week back after half term.

We have been continuing our research on the Romans to create our own fantastic non-chronological report booklets.

In Maths we have been exploring fractions of amounts.

We also started our new topic - Active Planet.

We hope that you are all having a fantastic half term!

Don't forget Monday 22nd is an INSET day where we will be having the Spring Term parent interviews.

Your child has been sent home with the time of your appointment.

If you are unaware of your time slot or there is a problem, please give the office a call.

Friday 5th February

Year 3 had a great week this week.  Ask your child what they learnt about Hadrian's Wall in Topic.   In Maths we have now introduced multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit and will be continuing with this next week.  We have been very impressed by the children's imaginative descriptions of Paris as they float over the city.

Please return the slip for the Parents' Interviews on Monday 22nd February as soon as possible.  We will be giving out appointments on a first come first serve basis.

From next week Spellings will be given out on a Monday to be handed in on a Friday.

Have a great weekend!
