Grammar and Spellings

Grammar and Spelling

Grammar and Spelling play a vital role in the writing experience. Grammar is taught in a contextualised manner within the Writing journey. Grammar is taught in connection with the style of writing being taught.

Spelling teaching begins with a dedicated lesson on Monday in which the children learn how to apply a specific spelling rule. The spelling rule is revisited throughout the week and links are made to our handwriting scheme (Nelson’s handwriting) to help further embed the learning. Children will receive their weekly spelling list in their diaries and these will be tested each week.

How Can I Help My Child with Spelling?

It is really important that parents and caregivers are involved in helping children to learn their spellings. Confidence in spelling allows children to write more freely and imaginatively. You should practise your spellings for 10 to 20 minutes EVERY day. Here are some games or ideas you could use. Why not try a different one each night to keep it fun and interesting. Remember everyone learns by; Doing it, seeing it, saying it, writing/drawing it, listening to it so making sure you have variety of games and tasks is a great way to ensure the learning sticks!

Here are 30 games and activities that you could use to help you practise your spellings.
